Problem of finding sufficient time to overhaul propulsion machinery becomes more acute as operational schedules become more demanding and as machinery gets older and thus increasingly difficult to maintain; suggestion is made in light of this problem; procedure advocated by Southern Pacific Railroad has been adapted to run-in procedures for diesel engines in both submarines and surface ships at San Francisco Naval Shipyard, and could be easily adapted to fit into submarine operating and maintenance programs; procedure is explained with accompanying curves and charts.
