Study of flow conditions in bottom of longitudinally framed cargo tank was instituted by Drysdale and Co; 1/5 scale model of lower third of center tank of 50,000 ton dw tanker was used as relative viscosities of water and average Middle East crude at 50 F are such that water in model gives flow patterns similar to oil in full size ship; tests confirmed that inability of cargo to reach pump suction is major cause of extended discharge times; improvements obtained by introducing flow holes are also reported. Based on paper before Soc Naval Architects and Mar Engrs, Apr 1964.
