Interest in theoretical study of principles involved, which has increased with widening range of off-road vehicles, has no generally accepted name but may come to be called "terramechanics"; aim of this theory is better vehicle design through detailed quantitative understanding of factors involved; soft ground performance and prediction of traction and slip, particularly, are considered with reference to farm tractors; work at University of Newcastle and in other vehicle fields is noted.
