Tarpan was built by Adelaide Ship Construction Ltd for Rich and Smith, primarily for harbor towage duties but is also capable of carrying out ocean towage work; length oa 104 ft 6 in., breadth molded 26 ft 6 in., depth molded 14 ft 8 in.; vessel is powered by 7-cyl Ruston and Hornsby diesel engine, rated at 1280 bhp when running at 520 rpm; free running speed of 12 1/4 knots and static bollard pull of 19 1/4 tons were attained on trials.
