Discussion of simulation aspect of studies at British Aircraft Corp, Warton, concerned with design of high performance military GEM; it was found that for complex task of multiloop control in which each degree of freedom is marginally stable, fixed based simulator gives unduly pessimistic results; however, good correlation with handling boundaries established in flight is possible if assessment is made of effects of low stability in one mode, with other modes stabilized; results from simulator investigation of pitching characteristics of hovering vehicle are shown in diagram.
