Objective of hypersonic propulsion research and design of Hypersonic Propulsion Laboratory at Applied Physics Laboratory of John Hopkins University for inlet and combustion testing of air-breathing engines; program resulted in arc tunnel operation at pressures up to 800 psi, with running times up to 2-min and power inputs (single unit) up to 8.6 Mw; description of h-p arc heaters, power supply, and operating principles and electrode design; performance of arc unit and constructions of Mach 7-10 propulsion tunnel with emphasis on nozzle geometry.
