Root locus method for examining influence of structural coupling on stability of uncontrolled aircraft is presented; graphical technique permits rapid but accurate quantitative evaluation of effects of changes in aeroelastic and aerodynamic characteristics on aircraft stability; problems involved in integrating flexible vehicle into automatic flight control system; similarity of problem as it exists in manned aircraft and multistage missiles; examples illustrate linear control design approach; promising new approach utilizing adaptive (nonlinear control) techniques.
