Analytic approximation is developed to determine temperature and thermal stress distribution; investigations show that results of existing thermal stress theories which neglect temperature gradient through skin thickness may exceed, in range of higher Biot numbers, true values by more than 30%; refined photothermoelastic experiments verify these results and add another significant conclusion, which is indicated.
