Effect of power plant characteristics which must be considered in selecting engine for VTOL aircraft; selection factors include power matching, disk loading, aircraft control provisions, weight trades, and transition; interrelationship of propulsion and aircraft characteristics are based on subsonic considerations with emphasis on VTOL rather than STOL; discussion is applicable to engines for VTO L aircraft of 0.3 to 0.9 Mach and of fixed wing category.
