Method for assessing cleanliness of gasoline involves forcing sample of fuel through small disk of automotive filter paper and measuring decrease in flow rate as filter gradually becomes plugged; use of method to field work and slimy or gelatinous precipitates; data obtained on commercial gasolines by "rate-of-plugging method" and by weight method are compared; study of factors governing amount of filter plugging by alkali-sensitive additives; results obtained.
