Problems confronting many port operators who must cater for bulk, general and specialized cargoes in light of new developments in both ship design, e.g., roll-on/roll-off vessel, and in cargo handling equipment; quay facilities are also considered; with regard to Port of London it is suggested that dock of future could very well comprise largely transit facilities at ship's side with warehousing premises and delivery services to road transport sited well away from dock area.
