As result of technological improvements excavators of 1962 are performing work at direct job unit cost no higher than their 1930 counterparts, in spite of 4-fold increase in price commodity index; major developments are due to improved engines, tires, and alloy steels; review of capabilities of present day power shovels, crawler tractors, dump trucks, graders, and road builders; future trends will incorporate automation whereby operation of fleets of earthmovers will be handled from remote control centers.
