Among wartime installations were 4 hards for LST type of landing craft; Hard S2, used for shipping railway rolling stock, consisted of tipped slope of rubble from blitzed ruins of town with top surface of "chocolate block" flexible concrete slabwork; landing craft berthed alongside dolphins of Douglas fir timbers; after war, tipped hard was removed and replaced by pontoon landing stage, for ferry service; recent, larger vessels required rebuilding of dolphins; greenheart was used as piling, and 3 dolphins were constructed as 4-pile braced cantilevers.
