Evaluation of possible competition between fuel cells and internal combustion engines within foreseeable future is discussed; fuel and oxidizer economics; high, intermediate and low temperature fuel cell is examined; it is concluded that since potential economic gains from either methanol or hydrocarbon fuel cells are relatively small at best, and research risks high, there appears to be little incentive to pursue these programs on "crash" basis.
