Paper considers background and meaning of key diesel fuel properties and how they relate to fleet performance and economy; elements of diesel fuel system include fuel tank and fuel line, primary filter, fuel pump, secondary filter, injection pump, injectors, and combustion chamber; in each of these areas, important contribution must be made by quality diesel fuel to provide minimum maintenance and cost of operation; description of laboratory physical tests; table shows repeatability and reproducibility levels of some of key physical tests used in describing diesel fuels as established by ASTM.
