Application of gas turbines to fire fighting vehicles has shown that overall engine performance is excellent with respect to starting, acceleration, gradability, and pumping ability; turbine is rated at 330 hp at 3400 flywheel rpm (38,500 rpm of first or gas producer stage); peak torque of 1200 lb-ft is obtained at full gas producer rpm with output section stalled; several vehicles which are either in operation or undergoing evaluation tests are described, including major problems encountered during construction; areas which still require further development are outlined and possible solutions indicated.
