It is suggested that in neglecting Ward-Leonard systems, which incorporate great number of rotating machines mainly equipped with commutators, possibilities exist for utilization of both slip-ring rotor and pole-changing squirrel-cage types; factors in motor design and operation are discussed; it is considered that no major disadvantages become apparent in winches of pole-changing squirrel-cage type, while number of factors would tend to suggest that certain advantages derived would favor selection of such equipment.
