Hydrodynamic aspects of problem of fitting main propulsion system to specified thrust vs speed requirements are discussed, and factors that affect overall propulsive efficiency and weight of system are considered; procedures for optimization of performance at design cruising speed are outlined; performance curves for specific design illustrate processes by which performance at off-design conditions can be evaluated.
