It is considered fair to say that in ships, electronic equipment used in automatic control and instrumentation has not displayed long term reliability expected from older, more conventional equipment; some advantages and disadvantages are discussed with particular reference to design of equipment for data logging functions of cargo monitoring and machinery and hull monitoring.
