About 3 yr ago investigation was begun at Ship Div, National Physical Laboratory on use of model experiments to predict thrust and torque fluctuations for ship propellers; initial attention was given to shipboard measurements, and attempts have now been made on five ships to determine unsteady propeller forces from measurements of shaft strains using resistance strain gages bonded to propeller shafts; concurrent development of analogous, simple method of measurement on propelled hull models has given promising results, particularly for torque determination.
