Paper examines advances in environmental facilities employing solar simulation systems and their capabilities and limitations; tests performed in General Electric Space Environmental Simulator at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania provided experience in use of artificial sun and comparisons between test data and performance predicted through use of analytical models; off-axis optical system with four banks of xenon arc energy sources is employed for solar simulation; techniques used to compensate for spectrum deviations are described.
