Possible post-Apollo missions embrace exploration of Moon and establishment of permanent manned lunar bases, unmanned planetary and solar probes, unmanned planetary landers, and manned exploration of near planets, particularly Mars; electric-propulsion systems that can be envisioned for these missions would have low thrust, and propulsion times would approach mission time; durability and low specific weight represent two most critical performance requirements of electric-propulsion systems; examination of these requirements.
