Voyager program, directed by Jet Propulsion Laboratory, calls for soft landing on Mars in 1971 to collect data about planet's surface, particularly biological data; needle-nosed probe is proposed which would be launched from fly-by vehicle into Martian atmosphere, picking up pressure, density and mass data until it crashes into planet; four sets of measurements that would be made during entry, and telemetered to fly-by spacecraft are indicated.
