Sterilization introduces serious engineering problems, especially by decreasing component reliability; type and duration of sterilization procedure must depend on some estimate of what constitutes acceptable risk of planetary contamination; attempt is made to provide means of computing level of spacecraft sterility as function of acceptable risk; derivation of general expression for number of viable microorganism by summing probabilities of all conceivable scenarios of scientific successes and biological contaminations; numerical values are displayed in graph.
