Analyses are presented which describe operation and characteristics of hypersonic plasma generator; nose cone of re-entry vehicle serves as thermionic emitter of electrons (cathode) which are conducted through shock ionized air stream, increased in kinetic energy by collisions, and collected over relatively cool vehicle afterbody, which is electrically insulated from nose cone and which serves as anode, or collector; load connected between cathode and anode within vehicle completes circuit; operation of generator, experiments carried out in plasma tunnel, and results obtained are given.
