To gain better understanding of near wake re-entry problems, authors requested and were granted conference with four astronauts who had orbited; their visual observations during re-entry are summarized; discussion and comparison of their impressions of flow-field geometry and coloration; review of theoretical base-flow analyses and experimental laboratory efforts; general Mercury test conditions and capsule geometry relative to Astronaut; general aerodynamic conclusions.
