Paper presents computer method developed in course of NASA study to maximize protection against mission failures by systematic selection of spare parts, and to establish relationship between mission success probability and level of spares provisioning; limitations of formulation discussed indicate profitable avenues for refinement of method; implications are presented for extension of spares optimization to form new reliability design criteria.
