Practices and recommendations in new 50-page ASA Standard, American Standard Practice for Roadway Lighting, are discussed; recommendations range from 2 ft-c for heavily traveled urban installations, down to 0.2 ft-c for some local roads; ratio of average brightness to minimum brightness on freeways is set at 3 to 1; important finding is that lamp output may be cut 30 to 50% by road film and dirt.
