High-strength, high-modulus composite materials; not only can provide high strength with high stiffness but also can provide improved fracture toughness, creep, and fatigue properties; composite materials offer improved service use by providing freedom from deterioration and ease of repair; recent experience has shown that airframes, rotary wings, and power-plants can be designed that possess superior performance with potential improvements in producibility and cost; evaluation of materials properties and design concepts has shown that future aircraft systems using composite materials will possess greatly improved performance characteristics.
