When helicopter is equipped with fluid anti-icing system, it is imperative that it be activated with minimum of delay when icing conditions are encountered; methods suitable for airborne detection of ice (mainly as applied to fixed wing aircraft) and special problems facing application to helicopters; methods tried on helicopters are reviewed; it is concluded that most satisfactory detector would be one that detects ice actually at rotor blade.
