Background to Research and Development Program, carried out by British Petroleum Co, Ltd; high temperature lubricants (MIL-L-9236 and DERD 2497) show most promise if new engine design and operating principles are finally adopted; with engines intended for hypersonic aircraft adoption of these new approaches may prove unavoidable; British Petroleum Co is investigating both classes of potential high temperature lubricants; phases of multistage development work are outlined.
