U S Navy became interested in dispersant oil in 1959 because of alarming accident rate and engine failures in flight with R1820-86 engine in T-28 aircraft at Naval Air Basic Training Command, Pensacola, Fla; results of service tests undertaken showing improved engine life provided justification for Navy-wide change; new lubricating oil specification, MIL-L-22851 (Wep), was prepared based on 120 sec dispersant oil to supersede MIL-L-6082 Grade 1100 oil specification, and issued for all reciprocating engine powered Naval aircraft; engine and airframe problems encountered.
