Importance of minimum safe viscosity for engine oil discussed; although author does not attempt to solve problem, he presents material accumulated as by-product of routine engine tests and development which indicates that rather low viscosities may be safe for bearings if and when amount of lubricant which reaches bearings will be adequate.
