Mar. 14: Technical side of subject receives much attention, but biographical works, memoirs, books long since out of print, official regulations, letters and hitherto unpublished manuscripts have been drawn upon to illustrate aspects of marine and naval engineering, and their influence on sea transport and naval warfare. Apr. 18: Work of Fulton and Bell marked inauguration of use of steamboats on rivers of America and Europe respectively; steam pressures were low, and boilers were great rectangular boxes with square furnaces and long winding flues, of such size that a man could pass through them; H.M.S. Lightning, built in 1823; performance of Enterprize, by which it was hoped to establish steam communication with India. May 30: Inauguration of transatlantic steam navigation and record of so-called Atlantic Ferry; in 1838 three British steamship companies despatched steam vessels to New York; with those companies and their ships, proper history of Atlantic Ferry begins; tables give principal dimensions of six vessels which ran to New York and of Britannia, first of Cunard ships which ran to Halifax. Aug. 1: By middle of last century British Navy possessed fleet of steam frigates and sloops which had done good work in all parts of world and had effectually demonstrated their value in naval operations; particulars of some of these vessels, and of so-called Siamese twin-cylinder engines. Aug. 15: Introduction of screw propeller: first British ship propelled by screw was Government transport Doncaster; account of more important inventions of propellers; trials of ships with different forms of stern. Sept. 12: Developments in use of steam for naval warfare; brief review of early works by naval officers. Nov. 21: Review of early history of iron steamship and iron warship.
