Most important application of geared Diesel drive for marine work is in twin-screw 17,000-ton transatlantic liners Milwaukee and St. Louis, of Hamburg-Amerika Line; in view of opinion that upper limit in manageable size of high-powered direct-drive Diesel has been reached, and having regard to reluctance of engineers to adopt Diesel-electric propulsion, there appears to be wide potential field for association of mechanical reduction gears with relatively small high-speed Diesel engines.
