Since 1932 Texas and New Orleans Railroad has been replacing open deck and ballast deck timber trestles with structures incorporating creosote, open deck "packed chord" design; advantages and results obtained; timber stringers comprising chords are placed tightly against each other and fastened with through bolts, instead of being separated few inches as in conventional construction.
