Aircraft design has been taught at College of Aeronautics, Cranfield, since 1946; course is at postgraduate level and is of 2 yr duration; in first year students are given 3 exercises in component design which aim to teach logical approach and fundamentals of subject; during second year each student works as member of team engaged in design of complete aircraft, of type currently investigated by industry; project aircraft incorporates experimental features and design work is therefore of nature of research.
