Environmental control system for Convair 880 and 990 commercial jet airliners consists of two identical turbocompressor packages for pressurizing aircraft and two identical vapor cycle Freon-114 packages for cooling and conditioning air supply; leaks in Freon evaporators and condensers were reported and investigation was launched to determine cause of leakage, means of repairing leaking heat exchangers and developing means of protection; it is shown that aluminum heat exchangers that are exposed to internal splashing of runway water or slush from landing gear are subjected to corrosive attack by presence of copper salts in contaminates; use of protective coatings is recommended.
