Tabulation of 1953-1963 air transport fatal accidents in 13 countries and definition of catastrophic, nonfatal, and survivable types of accidents; importance of seating design and efforts made by RAF and U SAF with regard to military transport seat specifications; comparison of performance of aft facing and forward facing seats; data from various experiments; it is shown that new crash safety standards are needed for air transports, based on man-rated, specified quantities of inertia forces for defined passenger seat orientations.
