Paper emphasizes difficulties of designing efficient metal structures when density is low; primary structure is limited by relatively low crippling strength under compression and secondary structure by practical limitation of minimal gages; aerodynamic smoothness is harder to achieve with such structures; some of detail techniques associated with this are reviewed; manufacturing techniques, such as adhesive bonding, roll-tapering, and chemicalmilling, are identified as particularly suitable for structures of low density.
