Processes of aircraft maintenance are divided into replenishment, preventative treatment, repair and overhaul; present overhaul philosophies are critically reviewed showing several areas of improvement through reduction of unnecessary activities and through improved ability to detect and correct impending malfunctions before they occur; failure prediction techniques and performance recording comprising data acquisition (or instrumentation), data retention (or recording and playback), and data analysis; example of such application with TWA (Trans World Airlines) is Jet Flight Log Analysis program.
