Paper is based on work done at Royal Aircraft Establishment; simulator in Aerodynamics Dept at Bedford is used for aircraft stability and control problems and simulator in Instrument and Electrical Engineering Dept at Farnborough for research into aircraft flight instrument displays; equipment is described with emphasis on methods of presenting to pilot simulated view of outside world, and for reproducing some of motion cues which he experiences in flight; examples of simulation studies into control of conventional and VTOL aircraft illustrate type of research problems and techniques involved in solving them.
