Operation of STOL aircraft is discussed, and lengths of available airstrips are compared with performance of contemporary transport aircraft; surface conditions appropriate to unprepared field operations are described with implications in design; performance, stability and control characteristics with reference to short field, paradrop and LOLEX (low level extraction system) missions are considered and design suggestions are made; estimate of cost of small package and emergency shipments indicates that STOL is less expensive than offloaded conventional transport.
