Paper deals with effect on aircraft design of some of operating parameters, in particular its operational takeoff characteristics when overloaded; data reported show that military VTOL aircraft is limited to short ranges and small loads; curves show effects of power loading and wing lift on takeoff performance; it is suggested that variable sweep wing will overcome conflicting requirements; variation of interference effects with engine position and forward speed is shown; pilot techniques used during short takeoff and some of engineering work carried out on variables sweep wings.
