Design philosophy employed, description and general arrangement of aircraft, developed by Lockheed-Georgia Co, to military and Federal Aviation Agency requirements and designed for truck-bed-height loading of cargo through aft end; it is powered by four Pratt and Whitney TF 33-P-7 turbofan engines, each rated at 21,000-lb thrust at takeoff power; engines are mounted in pods under wings and are completely interchangeable; special features of aircraft, conceived as troop carrier and cargo plane, include wing, nacelle, and main-landing-gear design; flight station and primary control systems; test programs carried out.
