To obtain data concerning handling qualities requirements for use by V/STOL aircraft designers, two airborne flight simulators were developed at National Aeronautical Establishment; simulators are similar in that each consists of Bell 47 helicopter modified by addition of autopilot, fly-by-wire control system and analog computer components; one of simulators, with provision to modify three angular rate responses, has been in use since Jan 1963 to gather data concerning handling quality requirements of V/STOL aircraft; second simulator with added provision to modify vertical velocity response of helicopter is in final stages of development and will be more versatile.
