Design features of Douglas DC-9 as they relate to operational aspects are discussed in terms of reduction or elimination of flight crew procedures; safety with particular emphasis on system backup capability in event of component malfunction; improved maintenance characteristics and troubleshooting procedures; flexibility to operate in various environments and under varying load requirements; standard seating capacity on DC-9 is 70 passengers with full services and 36-in. seat pitch; variations up to 85 seats at 34-in. pitch are possible; seating capacity of 90 passengers with nominal 32-in. seat pitch is possible.
