Background and development of lift fan propulsion system by General Electric for U S Army research Aircraft XV-5A; significant features of propulsion arrangement include dual inlet scrolls at each fan for engine-out light safety; pitch fan -- 36 in. aerodynamic scale of wing fan developing lift/weight ratio of 18; hover and low speed aircraft control derived from spoiling and vectoring fan thrusts; opposite rotation of wing fans; J85-5B engines modified for dry operation; fast convertibility, and 500-600-hr fan static and wind tunnel experience including 50-hr flightworthiness qualification; propulsion performance.
