Requirements of VTOL propulsion system lead to use of straight air intake configurations in which direction of intake axis can differ widely from direction of aircraft motion; data relating to mean total pressure loss and flow distortion in circular intakes under cross-flow conditions are presented for five cowl shapes; boundaries were established between regime in which cross-flow effects are small and regime characterized by flow separation; in latter, pressure loss and flow distortion are severe and dependent on cross-flow conditions.
