Analysis of accuracies to be expected, both in altimetry and in automatically reported altitude, shows that systems installed under current rules and regulations could cause more communication between controller and pilot than now exists; it is concluded that certain ground rules must be established to make program of automatic altitude reporting success; tolerances for altimetry systems must be considerably tightened, pilot must fly same altitude information that is being reported, controller must be educated to fact that instruments do have errors, and criteria governing vertical separation should be carefully re-examined.
